Patients who want their eyes to look awake, refreshed, and full of energy instead of tired and droopy will find that upper blepharoplasty is an excellent solution. This procedure is perfect for getting rid of the excess skin that causes the upper eyelids to hang over the eyes. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may also be performed at the same time as a forehead lift, especially if a patient has significant skin overhang in the upper eyelids. Sometimes, patients who believe they need upper eyelid surgery find that a forehead lift better meets their surgical goals. Why Do People Come In for Upper Blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty is conducted to achieve one or both of the following:
- Functional/Medical Reasons: A drooping upper eyelid can sag to the point where it blocks peripheral vision. The field of vision gets blurred on the upper as well as outer areas. The predicament affects even small functions like reading and driving, and it is more common in older patients.
- Cosmetic/Aesthetic Purposes: When the upper eyelid droops, it can make a person look older than they really are. It can also create a constantly tired appearance. Fine wrinkles may also appear on the eyelids. To restore the look of youth by tightening and smoothing out the upper eyelids, cosmetic upper eyelid surgery can be performed.
Good Candidates for Upper Blepharoplasty
Patients who are looking for a practical, safe, and reliable solution to excess upper-eyelid skin would be good candidates for upper blepharoplasty. They would need to have realistic expectations and should be in good health.
Patients who are suffering from conditions related to their eyes or the area around the eyes will have to first resolve these issues. Patients are required to avoid harmful habits such as drinking and smoking before the upper eyelid lift procedure.

The Consultation
Before coming in for their upper blepharoplasty procedure, patients will first need to schedule a consultation. This will involve an examination of their upper eyelids to determine how much skin will need to be removed. Patients will also be asked questions about their medical history, including any medications they are currently taking.
The Procedure
Surgeons can use a combination of local anesthesia and sedation at the start of upper blepharoplasty in order to ensure that the region is numbed and that the patient does not feel any pain. General anesthesia is another excellent option, and this type of anesthesia induces a state of deep sleep.
Once the anesthesia has taken full effect, a tiny incision is created in the area at the top of the lid, right in the natural crease. Through this incision, Dr. Reichner is able to tighten sagging muscle tissue, remove excess eyelid skin, and tighten the remaining eyelid skin. Finally, the incision is closed using dissolvable sutures.
Upper Blepharoplasty Aftercare
After your upper eyelid surgery, you will need to be driven home by a friend or family member, since you will not be able to drive for a time. They may need to stay overnight in order to help around the house.
The upper blepharoplasty recovery process requires patience and care. You will need to make sure that your eyes are moisturized often, which can be done with artificial tears or eyedrops as prescribed. Ointment may also need to be applied.
You will need to take time off from your job until cleared to return. It will also be important to avoid physically taxing activities. Follow Dr. Reichnerβs post-surgical care directions as closely as possible so that your healing process is as comfortable and free of complications as possible.
